On June 9th -11th, 2023, Rev. Randy Myers and Mr. Lee Hargrave had the opportunity to attend the Annual Synod Assembly of the Virginia Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. The theme was “The Way in the Wilderness.”
Randy and Lee manned our GraceInside table/exhibit throughout the event. The also got to experience a history-making moment in the lives of our Virginia Lutheran Brothers and Sisters. With the upcoming retirement of current Bishop Robert Humphrey the Virginia Synod of the ELCA voted on a new Bishop at this Annual Synod. The Rev. Dr. Phyllis Blair Milton, Pastor of Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Portsmouth, VA was elected on the sixth ballot. She will be the first female and the first person of color to be elected as Bishop in the history of the Virginia Synod of the ELCA, and she will take office September 1, 2023. We want to congratulate Rev. Dr. Phyllis Blair Milton on her election, and all of us at GraceInside look forward to working with her in her new role as Bishop!
